SMHS Recycling Program News & Events

South Mountain High School kicked off the District Wide Recycling Program in February 2009.  We were the first school in the district to receive 100 recycle bins for every teacher, and a big district recycle bin to collect all of our recycling.

One school really can make a difference! Our 2,000 students kicked off this initiative for our district, and now there are 30,000 students across the district participating in recycling!

Here are our 09-10 recyclers!

They are part of our current Recycling Program.

These students collect recycling from the Administration office, Security office, PE building, library, copy room and printing rooms.  They work on Tuesdays and Thursdays during their lunch to go around our campus and collect recycling.

The Phoenix Union High School District had this to say about South Mountain's recycling efforts in February 2009:

South Mountain High School Recycling Program

Earth Day celebrating started a day early at South Mountain, when the Recycling Club became the first recipients of 100 recycling bins donated by Hudson Baylor West.  The roll-out of approximately 1200 bins district-wide is corresponding with the District re-purposing trash compactor containers into recycling receptacles at each campus.  Every classroom at South is getting a recycle bin in which students and staff can now co-mingle plastics, glass, paper and metals. The Recycling Club of 150 students already has 75 teachers on board, and will expand the program school-wide.  Students pick up the bins every Thursday, and empty them in the larger bin, and bring the classroom bins back to the classes.

"I like to help out, and we are learning a lot about the environment and recycling.  We all need to do more for the community.  I told my dad about it, and now we are recycling at home," said club member Christopher Sesma.

Allison Eades (Walden) is the teacher and advisor behind the Recycling Club.  Although she teaches English, she incorporates a science unit that includes reading and writing assignments on environmental issues.  Students keep a journal and have to write a proposal coming up with a "Save the Environment" technique.

The recycling effort is student-driven throughout the district, with student clubs such as Blue Planet Society and others implementing the programs.  The clubs can make some money recycling.

"They won't get rich fundraising, but it might be enough to pay for some pizza parties or other activities," Jeff Allemang, who oversees the District's Sustainability Initiative.
